Josephine at Forum: A Sneak Preview

Here's a sneak preview of forum @ silentSHOUT Short Film Festival 2011.
Josephine at Forum: A Sneak Preview

Transcription:

Josephine (actress):
(voiced by Lucy Lim)
“The other challenge that I felt was how to translate English sentences into Sign Language. Again like I said, we didn’t want it to be in verbatim and we have a deaf linguist, Koon Wei and she was there to help me to translate many of the sentences so that it makes sense in sign language, and then we taught Walter, a FOD (friend of deaf) guy  - the main actor, and then we had a couple of full rehearsals, we had discussion, and we tried different emotions we want to be using in the film; sad, anger…...There were several attempts, but we always be positive, we enjoyed working with Margaret. And asking me to cry was very difficult; how do I become angry, how do I really throw out my emotion, I just cannot. The tears just run out, so I wondered what should I do and then that time I was lucky because,  at that time when we were filming, somebody was smoking away the Aedes environment, then I have these tears in my eyes, I was so natural and I am so happy. And I knew the crew were laughing when it happened. That was a very good experience for us and after that it went well."

Margaret (director):
“Something to add here, actually it was a surprise shot. When we rolled the camera, before I rolled the camera, that's my first shoot, I told Josephine "don’t blink your eyes", so she opened her eyes wide and big! And that time the government department came at the area, had this Aedes spray, so there was smoke get in the house. Well it was supposed to 'cut'! But I realized there's tears coming out (from Josephine), so I said "roll  the camera, don't stop, roll! roll! roll! for few seconds, and we got the shot and used it for the film. And actually it was a surprise during the production. Thank you Josephine.”

Want to know what did Jessica Mak wish for the festival? Check out the clip :)

Transcript of Jessica's signing:

"Hi, my name is Jessica Mak (sign name: JC). I would like to thank silentSHOUT for inviting me to share with friends and the Deaf community about the upcoming Short Film Festival. The festival is to showcase the work of Malaysian Deaf filmmakers such as shooting a short film, getting actors to act, editing techniques and the creativity on telling stories, to show to the public. It doesn't matter what are the short films about. It is to show the Deaf person's creativity through short film and let the public watch it.

Is this a good event or not? I think it is a good event because when I was small, I never heard about Deaf films. And now, on 17th December 2011, it is going to be the fist Deaf Film Festival in Malaysia. I'm excited because it is the first time. Many Deaf people will go to the festival to watch those films.

I would like to encourage Deaf people who are interested to shoot film, doesn't matter the film is good or bad, attend the festival to share and learn from each other. It is the same for the Hearing people. If you are really interested to shoot films, it is important to continue it whether it is for hobby or wants to turn to become a profession.

After the Deaf & Hearing communities watched the films, they will understand about Deaf life. Regardless you are deaf or hearing, one can understand through film much more easier compared to reading books. This is because some deaf don't read well and some hearing don't like to read.

After watching the movies, people will share the movie with their family and friends. I hope this festival will be continued for next year and onwards. I do support and hope that whoever likes to write story and shoot film continue to do what he/she is doing and one day become success to show to the world that You Can Do It.

Thank you."

Silent Coffee, 4th

Date: 15th Oct 2011 (Saturday)
Time: 6.30 pm - 10.30 pm
Venue: 'Q' Bistro (between the Curve & Tesco)

Silent Coffee is the support group for Deaf and Hearing Filmmakers, who meet up to discuss/ brainstorm, and sometimes argue...(good argument of course). At this session, we share opinion, and help each overcome our needs as filmmaker, i.e. talent or equipments.

Everyone has stories in their heads. Sometimes friends can help to sight and motion the internal stories in our heads, and breathe better ideas of our internalised stories and animate that thoughts. And you might get hearing friends lending their ears to "sound" your story.

The public is welcome to join Silent Coffee. All you need is just buy your own teh tarik and join our discussions. =)

Everyone has a story. What's yours?

Eh, feed your brain cookies.

See, he's watching the match.....

and the match 1-1.

SilentShout & Shoot ; Short Film Making Workshop

Together Deaf and Hearing wrapped and roll in silentSHOUT short film making workshop.

In June 25th – 26th, 2011, we has hosted a hands-on training workshop focusing on the introduction to the short filmmaking. The two-day workshop was held at Rukun Tetangga Brickfield, KL.

Forty Deaf and Hearing participants were wrapped with the idea of writing, producing, directing and editing under the guidance of the professional film-maker, Kareem Koh.

silentSHOUT team wish to introduce and coach Deaf people to be film-makers and use this medium as their voice and tell their stories to the world.

This is our first project. We believe in hands-on workshop as this will provide guidance to the learning curve. Besides learning the art and craft of film making, the Deaf and Hearing collaborate together to create story-driven short films. They worked together to brainstorm, write, direct, and edit a short film. We believe this interaction helps Deaf and Hearing understand both cultures.
Participants work on shooting.

Interestingly, Canon is supporting silentSHOUT with cameras and technical advice throughout silentSHOUT film workshops.

Seminar Pembuatan Filem Pendek silentSHOUT
